Who was Haym Salomon?
Truly "America's first Jewish patriot," Haym Salomon was born in Poland, lived in New York, but consummated his life's most important work in Philadelphia. It was Haym Salomon who, in the dark days of Valley Forge, contributed his entire personal fortune-and stood as security for hundreds of thousands of dollars more-to buy the guns, ammunition, food, and clothing for Washington's and Lafayette's tattered armies. During the early, feeble days of the great Revolution, it was Haym Salomon's loans to a number of future presidents and statesmen which enabled them to continue in government service. Broken in health, Haym Salomon died in Philadelphia at the age of 45-a pauper, his money un-repaid. Only letters of appreciation from Washington, Robert Morris, James Madison, James Monroe, and scores of other Revolutionary leaders were his repayment. Occasional attempts in Congress to reimburse Salomon's heirs in money or by medals or memorial institutions have died out miserably and shamefully. Until today, outside of a monument in Chicago combining Washington, Morris, and Salomon, no other memorial has been accomplished. Haym Salomon Memorial Park today is the long-deserved tribute to the memory of this Jew whose love of his adopted country cost him his fortune and his life.
